Most streaming PC guides read like a parts list someone copied off a retailer page. They tell you to buy a strong CPU, a current GPU, and 32GB of RAM, and then they stop. That is fine if you are building a generic gaming rig. It is not fine if you are pushing 1080p60 to Twitch while running OBS, a browser with eight tabs, Discord, a chat overlay, and a capture card all at once.
We had a Toronto streamer drop off a build last month that was technically "spec-compliant" - Ryzen 7, RTX 4070, 32GB DDR5 - and it was still dropping encoded frames during high-motion gameplay. The hardware was not the problem. The configuration was.
This is the part of the streaming PC build conversation that gets skipped, and it is where most viewers can actually tell the difference between a polished stream and a janky one.
The CPU Conversation Has Moved Past Core Count
For years the advice was "more cores for streaming." That is still directionally correct, but it is no longer the differentiator it used to be. Modern GPU encoders (NVENC on NVIDIA, AV1 on RTX 40 and 50 series, AMF on AMD, QuickSync on Intel) have offloaded most of the encoding work off the CPU. If you are encoding with x264 on CPU in 2025, you are either chasing a very specific quality target or you have not updated your OBS workflow in three years.
What the CPU actually handles on a streaming rig is everything else: the game itself, OBS scene compositing, browser sources, chatbots, audio routing through VoiceMeeter or similar, and whatever else lives on the second monitor. A Ryzen 7 7700X or Core i7-14700K handles this comfortably. A Ryzen 9 or Core i9 is overkill for pure streaming and only justifies itself if you are also editing video on the same machine.
Pro Tip: If you stream and edit on the same PC, prioritize CPUs with strong multi-threaded scores. If you stream and game only, the gap between an i7 and i9 is mostly wasted money you could put toward a better GPU or faster storage.
The GPU Encoder Matters More Than the GPU Tier
For streaming specifically, the encoder generation matters more than raw rasterization performance. NVIDIA's NVENC has been the practical default for years because of its quality and OBS integration. The current RTX 40 and 50 series adds AV1 encoding, which produces visibly cleaner streams at the same bitrate compared to H.264 - useful if you are streaming to YouTube or Discord, less useful for Twitch where AV1 ingest is still rolling out.
AMD's RX 7000 and 9000 series AV1 encoders have closed most of the historical quality gap. Intel Arc cards punch above their price for encoding specifically, though driver maturity remains a consideration if you are running edge-case capture setups.
The practical question is not "which GPU is best" but "which GPU is best for the game you actually play at the resolution you actually stream at." A streamer running competitive shooters at 1080p240 has very different needs than someone streaming cinematic RPGs at 1440p60.
RAM: 32GB Is the Floor, Not the Goal
32GB DDR5 is the realistic baseline for a streaming PC build in 2025. Not because games need it, but because OBS, Chrome, Discord, Spotify, a chatbot, and a stream deck companion app collectively eat 8-12GB before the game even launches. Add a modern title that wants 16GB and you are paging to storage on a 16GB system.
If you are buying 16GB DDR5 in 2025 because the build guide you read in 2022 said it was enough, you are solving last year's problem. The stutters you will get during a raid boss or a clutch round are not the game's fault - they are your RAM running out of headroom because OBS just spawned a browser source.
64GB is worth it if you also edit, run VMs, or do any production work on the same box. For pure stream-and-play, 32GB at a real-world speed (DDR5-6000 on AM5, DDR5-6400 to 7200 on Intel) is the sweet spot.
Storage Is Where Most Streaming Builds Get Cheap
A streaming PC writes a lot. VOD recording, replay buffers, clip exports, and game installs all hit storage simultaneously. A single 1TB NVMe drive holding your OS, games, and recordings will get fragmented and slow within months.

Dual-PC streaming setups made sense when CPU encoding was the only quality option and offloading OBS to a second machine was the only way to get a clean stream without tanking game performance. In 2025, with mature GPU encoders, a single well-specced PC handles 1080p60 streaming for the vast majority of creators without breaking a sweat.
Where dual-PC still wins: 1440p or 4K streaming at high bitrates, multi-cam productions, or workflows that involve heavy real-time effects in OBS. For everyone else, the second PC is mostly nostalgia and rack space.
