UofT Enhances Research Infrastructure with High-Performance Servers from OrdinaryTech

Challenge

The University of Toronto (UofT), one of Canada's top research institutions, was facing increasing pressure on its existing computing infrastructure. Departments conducting advanced simulations, AI model training, and large-scale data analysis were experiencing bottlenecks in performance, limited compute availability, and over-reliance on shared university clusters and cloud environments. With research timelines tightening and data workloads growing, UofT needed a high-performance solution to support its faculty and research labs without compromising speed or reliability.

Solution

OrdinaryTech partnered with UofT to design and deploy high-performance servers, optimized for AI/ML training, parallel computation, and real-time data processing. Working with their IT and research leads, we custom-built a modular system that could scale as demand grew - equipped with multi-GPU capabilities, high-speed storage, and robust thermal management.

The infrastructure was integrated into UofT’s existing research environment, with a focus on plug-and-play usability, security, and minimal maintenance overhead. Our team also provided post-deployment support and upgrades to ensure the systems remained future-ready.

Outcome

With OrdinaryTech’s server infrastructure in place, UofT unlocked the following benefits:

- 50% reduction in compute queue times, accelerating research turnaround for faculty and research labs.

- 2x improvement in model training speeds, enabling faster experimentation and iteration in AI and data science programs.

- Significant cost savings by reducing dependency on external cloud computing for routine and high-load tasks.
